Welland Plants Trees!On Wednesday October 18 th at Rotary Club of Welland Park, Rotarians and students from Notre Dame College  School joined City of Welland forestry staff planting five trees. The City received a donation of 20 trees from TD Friends of the Environment Foundation Grant, a national charity that funds environmental projects across Canada. The City used 15 trees to beautify Rotary Park along the Welland Recreational Waterway. These trees are the beginning of the replacement of trees devastated by the Emerald Ash Borer Thank you to Welland City staff and the students for making this area more desirable for the community. District Governor’s Message By: Scott D Marcin, JD Rotary International D7090 District Governor 2023-24  I have a little secret to tell. As DG for Rotary International D7090, it’s actually a bit embarrassing. But the honest truth is that not too long ago, I really did not have a good understanding about the Rotary Foundation, and as a result, I did not give it the proper support it so richly deserves. But thanks to the efforts of our PDG’s, our own D7090 Foundation Chair Sandi Chard and my own club’s Foundation Chair Sandy Nobel, I have become a Rotary Foundation Convert. But having the great honor of being chosen to be a DG, my mentorship and training, have given me the opportunity to really appreciate the Rotary Foundation and all it represents. As we begin Foundation month in Rotary, consider the Foundation for your donations. Consider leaving a bequest to the Foundation in your will. Consider having a fund raiser at the club level for the Foundation. And make sure you honor those who have made a contribution to the Foundation. Because it is through these efforts, that Clubs all around the world will undertake and complete projects to benefit those most in need. That those projects will have made lasting impacts to communities near and far. That many lives will have been changed by the completion of those projects. That those projects will have made our world just a little bit better place to live in. That through these projects, we will have brought optimism to those most in need. You will have Created Hope in the World! |

The Rotary Club of Welland held its 7th Annual Bocce and Past Night on Tuesday September 26th at Casa Dante. 65 Rotarians, family, and friends came together to socialize and have fun. We welcomed our friends from the Special Olympics, two teams from the Rotary Club of Grimsby, three teams from the Rotary Club of St. Catharines South, two from the Rotary Club of St. Catharines Lakeshore and one team from the Rotary Club of Niagara Falls. We can’t forget our host, Casa Dante. The tournament winners taking home the coveted trophy were the Diamond Diggers, consisting of Rotarians Peter Inman and Brad Wood, with Nancy Inman and Harvey Rossman. Dundas Valley Sunrise Celebrates Satellite Charter The Rotary Satellite Club of Dundas Valley Sunrise: STamp Out Polio held its charter celebration on World Polio Day at the Collins Hotel in Dundas. Thie Convery, chair of the club, welcomed members of the host club as well as almost all of her club’s members. As well, Valarie Wafer Past RI Director 2020-2022 and Vice-President 2021-2022 and her husband Mark attended. Surprise guests by video were Past RI President Jennifer Jones and Senior Major Gifts Officer Carolyn Ferguson. Dundas Valley Sunrise Past President Phil Wood presented Thie with $2000 towards Polio eradication and then Thie added another $25,000 of her own money to the total which she gave to Valarie Wafer. Valarie then virtually passed it off to Jennifer Jones. Food, beverages, dessert and great fellowship added to the enjoyment of the evening. Annual Food4Kids Food Drive Up 28% over Last Year!  The Rotary Club of St. Catharines Lakeshore recently held its annual Food Drive on Friday September 22 to assist the Food4Kids Niagara Program. Club members staffed collection bins at two No Frills stores in St. Catharines from 1 to 5 p.m. As reported by Rotary of St. Club Food4Kids Chair Marlene Mader, “Despite the current economic climate, shoppers at the two locations dug deep this year. After sorting and counting at Food4Kids, the Community had responded by donating over $3,900 in requested food items and an additional $1.235 in monetary donations.  Jamestown Rotary: “Citizenship Day: A Global Perspective” Members of the Rotary Club of Jamestown, and their Brazilian exchange student Joachin Caparroz, participated in the Jamestown Community College Citizenship Day recently. With up to 200 8th-11th grade students in attendance from local schools, the group heard a presentation by Andrew Beiter of the RFK Human Rights organizations, then participated in a scavenger hunt around the campus, followed by a luncheon and an international student panel consisting of JCC international students. The event was very well attended with over 100 plus students wanting to learn about the exchange program. Exchange student Joachin was extremely helpful in delivering information to the students. /Gift-of-Life.jpg) Our District 7090 Gift of Life Board members wish to thank all Rotarians in our district for their generosity. We want to thank all who purchased chocolate hearts and all those clubs that so generously donated money in addition to hearts bought by individual members.
We are happy to announce that we were able to donate $8000 from our district to a global grant, GG2346903, submitted by GOL International. That grant will provide surgical care to 76 children born with congenital heart disease in Andhra Pradesh, India and the amount from District 7090 is enough to support surgery for seven (7) children through that grant. U.S. clubs donating this year are (in alphabetical order): East Aurora, Eastern Hills Sunrise, Holley, Hamburg, Hamburg Sunrise, Jamestown, Lancaster-Depew, Orchard Park, and Westfield-Mayville. Certificates of support were presented to each of these clubs. It’s Been an Active Fall Season for the Rotary Club of FonthillThe fall of 2023 has been an active and productive season for our club, and it isn’t over yet! Here are a few of our accomplishments and planned events for the closing of the year. Purse Bingo! Back in 2019, Jackie Van Lankveld, from the Rotary Club of St. Catharines, started a global grant for the building of a new school with the support of The Rotary Club of Buffalo. The school was completed in 2021 for orphaned and vulnerable children in Bugiri, near Entebbe in Uganda. Jackie went back to visit the school this past April and the director made a video while she was there. The link for the video is below and there is a picture of Jackie with the kids. Fort Erie Rotarian Vincent Quon reacted to an illustration in the current (November) issue of the Rotarian magazine. Vincent contacted the editor of the magazine with the following letter: Dear Editor:
This is referring to the picture on page 7 of November 2023's Rotary Magazine.
My first impression: what a terrible picture of a piece of artwork to put in your magazine. Many Rotarians don't care, may not even notice it. But first impressions DO count. Especially for people and Rotarians outside of the United States.
They may see what Americans may not see. Asians in America would notice it for sure. The picture on page 7 gives an impression that East Asians/SE Asians are fat lazy people, being gluttonous, putting dirty feet up near food. Again, non-Asians will say what is the big deal? It's funny. With enough negative impressions seeping in via mass media; non-Asians may continue to see China and other East Asian countries in a negative light; causing negative events such as increased Racism. |

Lockport Rotary & Other Service Clubs Convene With The Head Of Local SchoolsThe Zonta Cl  ub of Lockport hosted a local service groups’ luncheon with keynote speaker Mathis Calvin III, superintendent of Lockport City School District, on Tuesday.  During the month of October, three members of the Westfield-Mayville Rotary Club were honored for their "service above self" to their communities. Our club is so fortunate to have these Rotarians who are stars in our community! The wife and husband team of Janese and Tom Berhouse were honored with the Westfield-Barcelona Chamber of Commerce's "Community Impact Award". Tom and Janese can be found working behind the scenes in many different organizations. Earlier this fall, more than 50 Rotarians in leadership positions took part in a CLUB STRATEGIC PLANNING session with Matt Smith and Robert Morrow, and with excellent examples of plans from two clubs. As we move towards the late fall and wintertime periods, your Visioning and Strategic Planning team would like to establish its areas of focus for this period. Research indicates that clubs that have strategic plans are: · more vibrant · have members with a more positive view of their club · have members who are more positive about its effectiveness in the community. Rotary's "Action Plan and You" Course Club leaders are encouraged to get in touch with Matt or Bob to indicate if/when your club might be interested in proceeding with the development of a club strategic plan. Live Theatre Bringing Local History to Life - Celebrating our 20th year in 2023 The Rotary Club of Lincoln’s “Lamplighter Tour” is committed to building economic development through culture, showcasing local talent, history, and heritage sites. The many hours of practice, rehearsing lines, learning the moves of the characters all came together on October 12, 13, 14 and 15th. The walking tour began over 4 days and the efforts of over 100 volunteers culminated together, in what can be called the “ultimate team experience” to create what is known as the “Lamplighter Tour”.
