Rotary Membership Types at Darcy Simoi blogSometimes growth begins by strengthening the club experience we already have.
When we talk about membership growth, our first thought is often, “How do we find more members?” That is certainly part of the conversation — but perhaps it should not be the first question we ask.
Before inviting someone to join our Rotary club, we might want to ask a more fundamental question: What are we inviting them to join? “What are we inviting them to join?”
• What is our club known for in the community?
• What do our members value most about belonging?
• Are our meetings enjoyable and worthwhile?
• Do members feel heard, involved and connected?
• What do we want our club to be known for?
Strong clubs do more than recruit. They create a member experience that makes people want to participate and gives them reasons to stay.
That means paying attention to current members as well as prospective ones. Ask what is working. Ask what could be better. Give newer members opportunities to share ideas, connect them with mentors, invite them into meaningful service early, and create social opportunities where relationships can grow. Then — most importantly — act on what you hear.
Sometimes a club may discover that it is time to try something different. That could mean changing a meeting format, introducing more flexibility, sharpening the club’s focus, refreshing the member experience, developing a satellite club, or exploring an entirely new club model.
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO THIS ALONE
Your District 7090 Membership Team can work with clubs that want to strengthen membership, improve retention, engage current members or simply talk about what might come next.
The North American Club Creation Team is another resource. Despite the name, its work is not only about starting new clubs. It can also help existing clubs explore a refresh — how the club operates, whom it serves, how members engage and what a renewed Rotary experience could look like.
Start with your District 7090 Membership Team. Together, we can explore options and connect your club with the resources that best fit its needs.
There is no single formula for a successful Rotary club. The goal is not for every club to look the same, but to create Rotary experiences that are relevant, welcoming and meaningful.
Sometimes the answer is not simply finding more people to fit the club we already have. Sometimes it is asking whether the club itself could evolve to better meet the needs of its members and community.
What could our Rotary club become?
