January has been an important learning month for Buffalo Sunrise Rotarians to jumpstart 2025.
Our meetings this month focused on enhancing the ways members describe the work of Rotary.
President Timothy Priano welcomed speakers from Dale Carnegie Courses and Toastmasters International, presenting on ways we are educating ourselves to develop the club's outreach, to create awareness and invite potential new members.
They heard presentations from Kelly Marie Harmon, Business Development Consultant, Dale Carnegie of Western NY and Greater Boston Area and Glenn Gordon, Downtown Toastmasters WNY.

- Don’t criticize or complain.
- Give honest, sincere appreciation.
- Be genuinely interested in other people.
- Remember and call people by their name.
- Be a good listener.
- Encourage others to talk about themselves.
- Help others feel important, and do it sincerely.
- Show respect for another person’s opinions.
- Begin in a friendly way.
- Use encouragement.
- Let others do a great deal of the talking.
- Let people think the ideas are theirs.
- Try to understand what others think and their reasoning.

Our speaker on January 21, Glenn Gordon, has been a Toastmaster for 15 years, during which time he has served his club in various roles, including President of Downtown Toastmasters. Currently he is interested in helping people reach their potential as speakers and leaders, using the Toastmasters platform as a tool to help them grow. His organization’s website is HERE.

In May 2019, two long-standing organizations, Toastmasters International and Rotary International, formed a unique strategic alliance, drawing from the strength of their many similarities and complementary differences. The opportunity for Toastmasters members is primarily to establish fellowship and make new connections, contribute more to communities, and potentially elevate clubs. Rotary members can develop new skills and may ask to visit Toastmasters clubs or receive evaluations. Toastmasters also developed eight educational courses for Rotarians and Rotaractors, available on Rotary International’s Learning Center.
