SELLING ROTARY TO YOUNGER PROSPECTS

This should not surprise anyone: Most people we’re hoping to recruit into Rotary know nothing about who we are or what we do. To further complicate our challenge of attracting them to Rotary, a recent survey showed that many younger people harbor outdated stereotypes of Rotary as an exclusive club of wealthy, older white men.

In 2009, I collaborated with local film maker and Rotarian John Paget to produce a short video, “Rotary Now” to challenge these stereotypes. It featured six young Rotarians from our District, explaining why they chose to join Rotary and why they stayed. You can view the video online at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3q0dMjZ_-I

As I visit clubs, I hear the same question over and over: “How can we make Rotary more appealing to younger prospects?” I don’t think there is a “one size fits all” solution, but I do think there are some things that will help us sell Rotary to younger prospects:

CONFERENCE - DID YOU KNOWS

  1. Did you know? Jamestown Rotary has the most people registered for the conference at 27 with Buffalo close behind with 25. Brantford Sunrise is the top Canadian club with 20 registered.  Impressive!
  1. Did you know? A per capita by club is a tougher number to come up with but we know Delhi and Holley are very small clubs and they are showing 4 and 7 attendees respectively.
  1. Did you know? Wallkill East - District 7210 - has 2 people coming and the PDG for District 7080 is coming as well.
  1. Did you know? Norfolk Rotaract has 4 coming.
  1. Did you know? In total, over 60 Rotary clubs are going to be represented!

It is going to be a fantastic conference!!!!

ANNUAL FUND: WILL THIS BE A BANNER YEAR?

The Rotary Foundation has had a long standing Banner designation program which has proven to be very successful in recognizing the Foundation’s appreciation for Rotary clubs that financially support its grants and programs. The goal this year is to have all clubs actively involved in making progress toward becoming a 100% Foundation Giving Club, 100% Every Rotarian Every Year (EREY) Sustaining Member Club, and/or one of the Top Three Clubs Per Capita in Annual Fund Giving.  Final certification for each of these categories is processed by the Rotary Foundation following the close of the Rotary year (June 30th).

This year some changes have been made to the banner program.  The previous 100% EREY and the 100% Sustaining Member Banners have been merged and there are now two new banners: the 100% Foundation Giving Banner and the 100% Paul Harris Society Banner.  The following is a list of the recognitions currently offered:

WORLD POLIO DAY LIVESTREAM

Brothers & Sisters in Rotary,

You’ll know that this September, Nigeria was declared polio free. That leaves Afghanistan and Pakistan as the only polio-endemic countries.

While no one can predict when polio will be eradicated, if present trends continue, we could see the last case of polio anywhere this coming summer.

In 1985 we had 350,000 cases per year. So far in 2015, we have had 41.

ROTARY WINE APPRECIATION FELLOWSHIP - BEST OF FRIENDS

The first-ever Rotary Wine Appreciation Fellowship at the local level – Best of Friends Chapter – was held on September 18th at the RedStone Winery in Beamsville, Ontario. It was a “sold-out” event with 31 Rotarians, spouses, friends in attendance.  The evening involved hors d’oeuvres and the tasting of five new RedStone wines.  At the end of the evening, a cheque was sent for $165 to Polio Plus.

Save the date - Our next event will be on November 20th at the Hamilton Golf and Country Club – wine tasting and food. Details to follow.  Later in the Rotary year - a dinner with wine pairings … or a wine tasting plus dinner (still working on it) in Western New York, probably in late March.

This year the Olean Rotary Club, with substantial fundraising assistance from the Interact Club at Allegany-Limestone, recently completed a water project in Niger. Two primary schools, with a total of 700+ students, now have running water on school grounds. BUFFALO BILLS LEGENDS MAKES FOR AN AWESOME TALK

At the September 14 meeting of the Rotary Club of Jamestown, Greg Peterson, an attorney with Philips-Lytle LLC, spoke about a series of interviews he performed with members of the 1964 and 1965 Buffalo Bills American Football League championship teams. He has interviewed several players from that championship team, including Jack Kemp, Booker Edgerson, and Paul McGuire. During his presentation, Peterson played a video featuring vignettes from his interviews with these Buffalo Bills legends, along with clips of coverage from the championship games and the seasons leading up to them. His presentation was timely, as the Buffalo Bills honored the 1964 and 1965 AFL Championship teams at halftime during their Sunday, Sept. 13 win over the Indianapolis Colts. During the celebration, 18 surviving members of those championship teams took a bow at midfield and enjoyed a standing ovation from the sellout crowd at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

READING CAMP REPORTS IN

During its Sept. 21 meeting, members of the Rotary Club of Jamestown heard a presentation from the Rev. Luke Fodor of St. Luke's Episcopal Church about the Children of the Book Reading Camp, which was held at the church between June 29 and July 25. Earlier this summer, Rotary Club of Jamestown sponsored the reading camp with a gift of $2,500. Rev. Fodor said the camp was a success, with as many as 20 children participating each week. As part of the camp, children enjoyed group activities; attention from certified teachers who worked with the children to teach them phonics, writing, and reading; and partner reading with community volunteers.

"This was intended to create a transformative relationship for both the kids and the community," Rev. Fodor said of the program. "This program emotionally impacted every person in the parish. One child told me, 'I wish this were my home.' That's what this community, working through this program, enabled us to do. It honestly turned into a life celebration and a real opportunity for engagement with children and families who might not otherwise have it. It mobilized people in our community and it was an incredibly humbling experience."

CORVETTE RAFFLE BRINGS IN $80k

The Rotary Club of Batavia, NY would like to report that we have just concluded our 13th Annual Corvette Raffle.  Each June, we mail out over 8300 raffle tickets to past and prospective buyers.  This year the winner could choose between a 2016 Corvette and $40,000 Cash. In addition, there were 15 additional prize winners of $500.00.   The proceeds from this project go to benefit healthcare, scholarships and community projects.  We are extremely pleased to announce that we had a net profit of approximately $80,000.

This project has evolved into our biggest fundraiser for our club.  Many hands are needed to stuff envelopes, place stamps and each Rotarian writes a personal message to their addressees.  We have found that the personal message generates a favorable response and we “connect” to our buyers.  As chairperson this year, I found this project very rewarding.  Many Rotarians across the United States supported our project and many took the time to send a note of encouragement. Many will ask for our “formula” to success.  I love boasting about this project because any club can do this.  The one thing that has brought us such a following year after year is the fact that we send out 3 tickets to anyone that has purchased in the past.  We have collected a mailing list of over 2500 addresses.  This year we did an email blast that generated 400 ticket sales in one week.

Each year we try to improve on the project and work smarter.  Due to the success this year with the email blast, next year we are definitely going to incorporate the use of emails sooner in our raffle. Check out this year’s winners @ www.bataviarotary.com

7th Annual Telling Tales Festival: An Awesome Celebration of Literacy

Canada’s FREE children’s literary festival happened on Sunday, September 20th at Westfield Heritage Village in Rockton, Ontario – and it was AWESOME! Author Neil Pasricha launched his new children’s book Awesome is Everywhere at the 7th Annual Telling Tales Festival! Here he is taking questions from kids in the crowd.
A crowd of over 7,000 children and their families were entertained by over 25 of Canada’s best children’s authors, illustrators, storytellers and musicians.  This event is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Hamilton.  Over 20 Rotary clubs from two districts help promote, gather used books and volunteer to make the Festival happen!

At this year’s festival, The Book of Awesome author Neil Pasricha launched his brand new children’s book Awesome is Everywhere to the world during the Telling Tales Festival. In fact, only those attending had a chance to buy an advance copy before it hits bookshelves next week!

David Bouchard shared stories about his Metis culture and treated the crowd to his flute playing. Poet Sheree Fitch mesmerized the crowds with her tongue twisting rhymes. Werner Zimmermannoffered illustration lessons to fans young and old. Richard Scrimger shared writing tips and advice to fans. TVOKids’ Ranger Kara kicked off the Reading Rangers Book Club Tour with a special reading. It was an exciting day of sharing and experiencing stories.

Aboriginal author David Bouchard shared his passion for stories and Aboriginal culture, and played a Native flute.
Aboriginal author David Bouchard shared his passion for stories and Aboriginal culture, and played his Native flutes.

The Telling Tales Festival is really a celebration of literacy. “Our goal is to foster a love of reading by exposing kids to authors and illustrators,” explains Susan Jasper, Rotarian, Telling Tales Founder and Chair. “The presenters on our stages are literary stars – kids have a chance to ask them questions, listen to advice and even get their autographs.”

This year’s theme was “Let your imagination soar”. During the Telling Tales Festival books and stories jump off the page; you can travel into a story, meet characters and even step back in time. It’s all about creating fond memories around storytelling – whether it’s a story told in a book, through pictures, in music, or through movement.

The Telling Tales Festival is a day where kids can talk to authors, get drawing tips from illustrators, and sing and dance along with musicians. It’s also a fun family day to simply play and explore.  It is an event to which all Rotarians should be proud!!

MORE HAMILTON NEWS:  Rotary After Dark - alternative meeting

Paul Harris created Rotary with the hope that people from different vocations would meet and connect.  Sometimes are formal meetings are too busy to get to network and get to know other Rotarians.  It is for this reason that the Rotary Club of Hamilton has a “Rotary After Dark” on the second Thursday of every month.  Rotarians from ALL CLUBS are welcome.  There is no speaker.  There is no formal meeting.  There are no anthems, toasts or even announcements.  It is just a chance to talk.

Please come and check it out - gatherings are at the Hamilton Club at Main Street (and James Street) in Hamilton Ontario from 5-6:30 pm the second Thursday of each month.  This meeting is in lieu of the regular noon day meeting normally held on the second Thursday.
