SUPPORTING OUR ANNUAL FUND

Many of us joined Rotary because we were attracted to the appeal of Service Above Self and our desire to Do Good in the World.  After joining Rotary, most of us discovered the amazing power of Rotarians working together to improve the lives of others – in our own communities and around the world.  We also learned about the power of matching grants that enable us to multiply the funds that we raise through the efforts of our own clubs.  Even modest fundraising efforts can result in much larger financial resources for a project due to matching grants from our District and The Rotary Foundation.

When your club decides it wants to do a local community service project and take advantage of a matching grant from our District, where do those matching funds come from?  If your club decides it wants to become part of an international humanitarian project and take advantage of a matching grant from our District and matching funds from The Rotary Foundation, where do those funds come from?

SEOUL OR BUST - EARLY REGISTRATION ENDS DECEMBER 15

Consider participating in our organized trip to the 2016 Rotary International Convention in Seoul, Korea.  Rotarians from District 5390 (Montana) will also be staying at the same hotel as listed in the itinerary below, Glad Hotel (or similar).  Last year, I joined District 5390’s land tour in Brazil and had an amazing experience.  This is the 4th group tour District 5390 has had in conjunction with Gate 1 Travel.

To receive the special group rate of land and air from Toronto we need 10 registrations.  We currently have deposits for 6 travel registrations.  A small deposit will hold your spot.  Benjamin from Gate 1 Travel has put together a great package for us (May 26, 2016 to June 3, 2016).  Check it out here: Seoul Itinerary.

POLIO UPDATE

Polio is a horrible, crippling and incurable disease.  BUT polio is also a preventable disease with the use of vaccination.  And with the help of Rotary District 7090, polio is on track to become the second human disease ever to be eliminated from the world, with smallpox being the first.

When the Global Polio Eradication Initiative was started, back to the mid-1980s, there were 350,000 cases of polio reported per year.  This past September, Rotary helped make history when Nigeria was declared polio free.  That leaves only Afghanistan and Pakistan as polio-endemic countries!  So far in 2015, we have seen only 51 cases of the wild poliovirus as follows:

Afghanistan  13
Pakistan  38

THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT - INSPIRES CLARENCE

I have incredible news to share with you.   As I mentioned during your club visit, the video that you played at our Spring conference about “The Butterfly Effect” was very inspiring to me.  Such a small act of kindness can go a long way…and that is what Rotary is all about…one act of kindness after another...Here is the video as a reminder - The Butterfly Effect.

To make a long story short -

BRANTFORD HOLDS MEETING AT MUSEUM

Rotary Club of Brantford honours its history in marking Remembrance Day onsite at the  Canadian Military Heritage Museum with a $500 donation.  Pictured here, President Rita-Marie Hadley presents a cheque to Brian Studier, Vice-Chair of the Military Museum Board.

The volunteer-run organization showcases a vast inventory in 13,000 sq. ft., where they frequently host school and tourist groups. The Rotary Club of Brantford was mindful of its history on Remembrance Day as it approaches its 100th anniversary in 2017.

ROTARIAN SPEAKS ABOUT EFFECTS OF POLIO ON HIS LIFE

The eradication of polio is not only a priority for the Albion Rotary Club, but it is also very personal for Albion Rotary member, Don Bishop.  In the photo, Bishop, a dentist, speaks about Rotary’s efforts to defeat polio during a recent meeting at Tillman’s Village Inn.

Bishop shared his family’s difficult experiences with the disease.  When he was a child, his family was exposed to the poliovirus, resulting in two of his family members contracting the disease. Bishop's mother was severely afflicted with the disease, causing her to be completely paralyzed from the neck down and confined to an iron lung.

SERVICE ABOVE SELF DAY - HANDS ON

November 5th was the Rotary Club of Buffalo's annual Service Above Self Day, when Buffalo  Rotarians do “hands-on” work for agencies that serve the community.  You could find Buffalo Rotarians at the Salvation Army, Buffalo City Mission, Foodbank, Goodwill, and Ronald McDonald House, sorting clothes, books, or food, cleaning, raking leaves, and anything else that needed to be done.  Even three of the club's exchange students pitched in.  Seen sorting clothes are two Buffalo Rotary exchange students, Benedikt Honeder from Austria and Mikkel Toft from  Denmark.

VETERAN'S DAY PASTA DINNER SPECTACULAR SUCCESS

The Rotary Club of Olean's 2015 Veteran’s Day Pasta Dinner was a HUGE success!  The move to the Allegany Legion provided more space inside and out than ever.  The parking lot was FULL FULL FULL!  More than 450 people were served in 3 hours!  Vets ate free.  Olean Interactors, Allegany-Limestone Interactors, and St. Bonaventure Rotaractors gave exceptional help!  The club thanks all its sponsors who made it a BIG night.  International service projects will be funded through this exceptional fund raising event.  A special thanks to executive chef, Carl Vahl!  The sauce and meatballs were AMAZING!

OUTSTANDING CITIZEN AWARDED

President Amy Thompson is pictured with Ken Hansen.  Hansen was presented both the Rotary Club of West Seneca Hero Award and a Paul Harris Fellow recognition.

Ken and Kim Hansen founded the Amanda Hansen Foundation shortly after the tragic death of their daughter, Amanda. She was at a sleep-over at a friend’s house, in the lower level family room. There were no carbon monoxide (CO) detectors; Amanda’s death was caused by accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. They felt compelled to found and continue working on the foundation.

SAVE THE MOTHERS SPEAKS TO CLUB

Dr. Jean Chamberlain Froese, an obstetrician with more than 20 years of experience and the founder of Save the Mothers, an international organization founded in 2004 that promotes maternal health in the developing world, spoke to the Rotary Club of Jamestown during its Nov. 23 meeting.  Earlier this year, the Rotary Club of Jamestown donated $2,500 toward the purchase of a surgical kit for the organization.

100% PAUL HARRIS CLUB ACHIEVED

Immediate Past District Governor (IPDG) Jack Amico presents Rotary International banner for achievement as a 100%  Paul Harris Club at The Foundation Dinner on November 8th.  John Huber accepted for the club.

When the club set out to achieve this, there were two Paul Harris Fellows to be awarded to make goal.  By the time the club was done, however; a total of eight would be awarded, including two that member Russell Salvatore received.  In the process, Rob Benzel (past president) also collected a PHF+2, with one being awarded from a club he visits frequently when in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

The Rotary Club of Lancaster-Depew has already accepted new members in this Rotary year, so the challenge is once again to become a 100% Paul Harris Club for the year ending June 30, 2016.   RI Foundation's recognition is both humbling and invigorating for club members to achieve greater projects and RI Foundation giving goals.

55 YEARS CELEBRATED
