Some of you are querying how your club may help those folks in Haiti who were devastated yet again. It wasn’t that many years ago, that much of Haiti was flattened by a disastrous earthquake. Now this!!! As many of you know our Roy Sheldrick, Ancaster Rotarian, has worked in Haiti for a long time drilling water wells and building latrines. Yesterday, he notified me that cholera has surfaced and is spreading fast across the area. The Hospital Albert Schweitzer has opened a wing for cholera patients. Roy has offered to accept cheques/checks to help fight this epidemic. To keep things simple make your donation payable to the Rotary Club of Ancaster with a notation “Albert Schweitzer Hospital for Haiti cholera epidemic” and mail it to Roy Sheldrick, C/O Rotary Club of Ancaster, 385 Jerseyville Road, Ancaster, ON, L9G 3L5 CANADA.
The highlight of my year thus far has been attending Governor Elect Training and the Zone Institute in Winnipeg, Manitoba in late September. Because of my late appointment last year, I did not have the opportunity to meet fellow DGNs in Providence, RI last year. Getting acquainted then, with 35 other DGEs, was an interesting and exciting opportunity. I finally have the picture of Zone 24/32 etched in my mind and know the four countries who make up the zones (Canada, United States, Bermuda and France).
The first two days of the week spent with my fellow DGEs and their spouses was indeed a fantastic learning experience. It was certainly worth the hours of homework in preparation for attending. We came home with pages of great ideas that will assist us as we go forward to 2017/18.
Polio Awareness Day is October 24, 2016. Last year on that day, Walli and I were on a cruise ship of mostly Aussies, travelling from Singapore to Sydney. During introductions at dinner, I gave my elevator speech to what turned out to be a rapt audience. Where we are with polio, from where have we come, the future, why we should care - will make a very powerful moment for you and Rotary - anytime, really. Whether or not you had a polio project on Awareness Day, if we all have 20 or 30 seconds prepared and use them, there will be "talk at the water cooler" beyond that; can you imagine?

At a recent meeting of the Rotary Club of Jamestown, the club welcomed a new member, Donna Bloomquist, RN.
Sponsored by Rotarian Wally Bloomquist (who is also her brother!), Ms. Bloomquist works as a Clinical Informatics Manager at Lutheran in Jamestown. Since 2011, Donna has worked for Lutheran, initially as a staff nurse, then as a nursing supervisor, and now manages Lutheran’s electronic medical records systems in her current role.
The Rotary Club of Lewiston, NY/Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON presented a check for $1000.00 to the Rotary District 7090 Gift of Life to aid in raising funds to help Develop a Sustainable Pediatric Cardiac Program at the Hospital Robert Reid Cabral in Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic. Chef Paul again provided excellent food, the weather cooperated and the unlimited wine and beer didn’t hurt. See you all next year.
Congrats to The Niagara Falls Rotary Club Sunrise RibFest Committee for raising $48,000, $3,000 of which will go to the Rotary Foundation, at this year's event which took place during the Father’s Day weekend in June.
Pictured here from left to right are Committee member Chris Ross, Club President David Berry, and Ribfest Co-Chairs Nancy Tkachuk and Scott Wright.
Dedicated, that is what club president Brian Williams and his wife Emily (with their 3 children) are. Together, this Rotarian family worked a Rotary Club fundraiser the night of Brian and Emily's 21st Wedding Anniversary. Lancaster-Depew Rotarians, in turn, celebrated with them following the event's closing at their high school football concession stand. The club uses funds raised from the concession sales each year to provide college scholarships to worthy students in need.

The Rotary Club of Norfolk Sunrise and the Norfolk County Fair partnered for the first annual Thanksgiving Monday "Great Race for Rotary". Pictured are George Araujo, General Manager NCF, and runner participant Helen Jones.
The Rotary Club of Norfolk Sunrise held The Great Race for Rotary at the Norfolk County Fairgrounds in Simcoe, ON on Thanksgiving Monday, October 10, 2016.
It was the perfect weather for running or walking and over 60 participants came out to enjoy the morning. It was a 5 KM or 10 KM run/walk through the streets and trails of Simcoe. Rotarians lined the route and water stations, welcoming and encouraging the runners to continue on. This event was a great partnership between The Norfolk County Fair and RCNS.
The Great Race For Rotary was created to honor a GREAT Rotarian, John Race, a man that loved Rotary, our fair, and our local trails. We hope we made him proud!
