District Governor Nominee Bill together with the District 7090 Assistant Governors recently played “web critics”.  Using the Rating Guides below, they looked at and rated (1 to 4 star) more than 110 Facebook pages and websites maintained by District 7090 Clubs and available on the web.   Not surprisingly given the talent and dedication of Rotarians, they discovered many outstanding Facebook and websites.

Of 52 club Facebook pages almost 80% (38) received a 3 0r 4 star rating.  Of 60 club websites reviewed more than 50% (36) received a 3 or 4 star rating. They all “Light Up Rotary on the Web”.   Club Facebook administrators and posters and Webmasters are the unsung heroes in efforts to “Light Up Rotary”.   Give them a “pat on the back” for a job well done!  Next step – “Tweet Rotary!”

Prior to 1988, polio was contracted by more than 1000 children worldwide every single day!  But in 2013, a polio diagnosis only affected approximately one child a day worldwide.  A staggering improvement indeed!

Last year, over 400 million children were vaccinated during 224 immunization campaigns in 43 countries.  However, the fragility of this progress is continuing to be underlined with polio re-emerging in previously polio-free countries.  Conflict, political instability, hard-to-reach populations, and poor infrastructure continue to pose challenges to eradicating this horrific disease.  These outbreaks need to reinforce the urgency of ending polio transmission in any infected area.

As a Rotarian, you’ll already know that we are “this close” to ending polio.  Now - right now - is our chance to change the world.  Your advocacy efforts - at the International, Zone, District, Area, Club and personal level - help ensure that no child will suffer from this crippling disease ever again.  We need to finish the fight for global polio eradication.  We made a promise to the children of the world.  Let us fulfill that promise by ending polio now!!

DG Jack's November Message

November is the month which Rotary dedicates to the Rotary Foundation.   Did you know that at the 1917 convention, outgoing RI President Arch C. Klumph proposed to set up an endowment “for the purpose of doing good in the world.” In 1928, it was renamed The Rotary Foundation, and it became a distinct entity within Rotary International.

In 1929, the Foundation made its first gift of $500 to the International Society for Crippled Children. That organization, created by Rotarian Edgar F. “Daddy” Allen, later grew into Easter Seals.  When Rotary founder Paul Harris died in 1947, contributions began pouring in to Rotary International, and the Paul Harris Memorial Fund was created to build the Foundation.

As the Foundation nears 100 years of age, we might stop for a moment or two to consider the good that the Foundation does in the world and how the contribution of every Rotarian, channeled through the Rotary Foundation, helps make it happen.  Through the years, support of Polio Plus, Group Study Exchange (and now Vocational Training Teams), Ambassadorial Scholarships, Peace Fellowships and today’s district, global, and packaged grants have enabled Rotarians around the world to respond to the world’s greatest needs.

The District 7090 Foundation Committee, under the leadership of Past District Governor Karen Oakes, is shining example of Rotarians doing good in the world through the Rotary Foundation.   With several clubs proud to be identified as EREY (Every Rotarian Every Year) a large number of Sustaining Members and a growing number of Paul Harris Society Members, Major Donors and Benefactors, our district has much to celebrate.  Unfortunately, our annual recognition dinner was a victim of the Snowvember storm but will be rescheduled in the near future.  We will also be celebrating our first ever Million Dollar Dinner next spring, recognizing those who are able to give substantially and who want to make Rotary their charity of choice.

From an administrative point of view, District Executive Secretary Pene Hutton, aided and guided by a substantial amount of research on the part of District Governor Nominee Bill Clevette, is in the process of rolling out a new version of the District 7090 ClubRunner web page.  We are trying to make more information directly available to our members with a minimum of searching necessary, while offering more of a marketing view of Rotary to non-members.  We anticipate the newsletter becoming more interactive as time goes on as well.  Most importantly, with the ongoing campaign to “Light Up Rotary”, our face to non-Rotarians in Southern Ontario and Western New York will be one which reflects on who Rotary is and why we do what we do.  Please take a look at the new site and keep checking in as it progresses.

Please don’t forget to wear your “LIGHT UP ROTARY” pin every day – it can be the conversation starter that you need to engage friends and acquaintances in Rotary, maybe even interest some of them in joining a Rotary Club.

Westfield Mayville honors dedicated Rotarian

Long-time Rotarian Jim Wakeman recently was honored by his colleagues in recognition of exceptional service, not only locally, but also world wide.  Previously the recipient of a Paul Harris Fellow award, which acknowledges dedication to Rotary’s community and international service, Wakeman was recognized as a Multiple Paul Harris Fellow for his long-term, dedicated commitment to Rotary causes. Wakeman continues to serve as the Rotary International Foundation chair and heads the Westfield/Mayville Rotary Club’s ‘End Polio Now’ campaign locally that ties in with RIF’s goal to eliminate polio world-wide.

Having joined W/M Rotary in July 2009, Wakeman has served as a director on the club’s board, Foundation chair and Community Service Committee member. Also, he was a presenter at a Rotary District 7090 Conference World Service Seminar and sponsored Niger Water Wells exhibits during two district conferences' "House of Friendship."
