DG JACK'S MARCH MESSAGE

To start off this month’s note to the outstanding Rotarians of Southern Ontario and Western New York, I have to apologize one more time for a misstatement in last month’s newsletter.  Under pressure to get a note out for the February District Newsletter BEFORE March 1, I managed to insult seventy-six exemplary Rotarians from our vibrant Rotary Club in Batavia, NY.  Having been with them when they presented a $10,000 check to the End Polio Now campaign, and having visited their club five days later to thank them in person, I managed to credit an equally vibrant club – Lockport – for the donation when I was hurriedly writing my Newsletter note.

They warned me that the job of Governor could take its toll physically (it really hasn’t).  No-one warned me that the brain might start playing tricks on me.  I can only apologize to Batavia, promise to take my meds on a daily basis, and triple-check everything I write from now on.

Seriously, KUDOS to Dan Fischer, Donna and Paul Saskowski and Ed Leising and ALL of the great members of the Batavia Rotary Club for their generous support of Rotary’s work to eradicate polio.

One good thing came of my error – I realized that a LOT of Rotarians DO read the Newsletter.  In case there was any doubt before, I have heard from a LOT of folks trying to set me straight.  I only hope that the Batavia Rotarians will forgive me in time to allow me to attend their 100th birthday as a club in four years.

Now, just one thought that I’d like to share with you for this month.  As Mike and I visit clubs (I will be glad to join any of our clubs in celebrating a Rotary Day, a Paul Harris Fellowship night an Installation Dinner or a fund-raiser – if it’s humanly possible to attend) I continue to be amazed at what a great group of people make up this world-class Rotary district, District 7090.  I even got to walk with one of my “giants” (if you were listening when I spoke at your club, you know what I mean) Roy Sheldrick.  I’ve tried to tell Roy’s story so many times to Rotarians far and wide that I think I may know it nearly as well as he does.  On the 24th of March, the city of Hamilton, Ontario AGAIN honored Roy with the 11th Annual World Water Day Walkathon which raises funds for Roy’s Haiti Water for Life project. And Roy was kind enough to let me walk with them.

So this note is one of thanks – thanks to the Batavia Rotarians for forgiving me, thanks to all who have extended the hand of friendship to “Mike” and me and thanks to my giants – folks like Roy, who make such a difference in the world.

Thanks to ALL of you for all that you do FOR and IN THE NAME OF Rotary.

DG Jack

WORLD POWERLIFTER SUPPORTS END POLIO NOW

Kimberly Walford is one of the greatest powerlifters to ever walk the planet and is cut from a different piece of cloth than 99% of people.  She dedicates her life to her sport and pours 100% of her heart and soul into it.  Kimberly is moving poundage at a bodyweight that has never been done before and her accomplishments speak volumes about her success.  She has more World and American records than you can shake a stick at and is just getting started.  Beyond her platform victories, Kimberly’s strength lays in her humble ability to motivate and encourage anyone to achieve their best, beyond what they can dream or imagine.

Kimberly has always been an athletic person, playing sports from the day she could walk, and credits mental toughness for improving her as an athlete.  She told me that she finds it damn near spiritual when you’re training and your mind can start to play tricks on you. You begin having conversations with yourself about quitting, being tired, and you have to fight through those thoughts because you know you must finish the job.

As Rotarians, we know something about not giving up.  We have not given up – and cannot give up – in our fight to eradicate polio from the face of the earth.  We are “this close”!  We made a promise to the children of the world – and we will finish the job!  Our thanks to Kimberly for taking time to show her support in our End Polio Now campaign.

PRESIDENTS ELECT & SUPER HEROES

At the recent gathering of Presidents Elect from District 7070, 7080 and 7090, a large number of presidents elect were probably a little shocked to discover their fearless leaders - District Governors Elect, were actually that - fearless and super heroes.

Gathering from the photo, we can surmise that the encouraging words to the incoming PEs were along the lines of being a hero for your club and community (local and world).

In case you are wondering, District 7090's DG Elect Kevin Crosby is in the middle, Captain America....go figure.  Perhaps it was his idea, hence he did not have to be either Hulk or Flash!

RLI GRADUATES 9

This past Saturday, March 21, forty Rotarians participated in Rotary Leadership Institute at Niagara County Community College.

It is exciting to see more of our clubs realizing the benefits of RLI and sending multiple members to RLI. The following clubs qualified for this special recognition of sending multiple participants, Akron Newstead, Brantford Sunrise, LeRoy, Lockport, Niagara Falls, NY, Welland, and Williamsville. How many participants is your club sending to the upcoming RLI event?

Nine Rotarians graduated from Part 3 of the program (all three parts must be completed in order to graduate from RLI): Melisa Schrock – Akron Newstead, Kevin Davis and Vinnette Gooden -  Brantford Sunrise, AJ Block – East Aurora, Aisling Heenan – Fredonia, Paul McAfee – e-club of SOWNY, Jim Ellison – LeRoy, Barbara Greenwood - Niagara Falls, ON, Kamil Umit Eruysal – Welland and Ed Stachura – Williamsville, will finish his part three when he feels better.  We hope that is June 6th. Get Well, Ed!

Registration opens on April 1, 2015 for the upcoming Rotary Leadership Institute on Saturday, June 6th at the Niagara College, Niagara on the Lake, ON.

Chris Cutler facilitated the Team Building session in Part 2. He certainly helped the 13 Part 2 participants get all tangled up, and then let them through teamwork find the solution to getting untangled. For a little while, it looked like they were playing a new version of Twister. We had arms and legs going in every direction.  In the photo - Jackie Davis, Lockport, John Cooper, Niagara Falls, NY, Justin Bester, Brantford Sunrise and Dave Greenfield, Lockport, have almost succeeded in their task of being free from the tangle except for their partner who held the other end of the cloth. It certainly put a smile on DG Jack and Mike Amico’s faces as they watched the antics.

USING DISTRICT STRATEGIC PLAN AT YOUR CLUB

Representatives from District Council and 30 clubs came together in April 2014 to review and tweak our District Strategic Plan. This District Newsletter series uses the results of that event to show how our District Strategic Plan may be useful at the club level. To review our Strategic Plan, http://rotary7090.org/SitePage/district-strategic-plan.  Or, you can google it, just make sure you are looking at the 2014 version.

Focus – To take diverse approaches to educate Rotarians about the larger world of Rotary and District Resources. There are many ways to bring the larger world of Rotary and District to your club. Most do not need to be time consuming nor take a lot of effort to put together. How about having your President use the ROTARIAN or our District Newsletter as a fun learning experience by doing a short, fast table-by-table quiz? Guaranteed you will find some members know the answers and other’s eyes will glaze over, but perhaps next month they will be up to speed also. A huge plus of these fun quizzes is the hoots and hollers. A laughing club is a prosperous one!

The incoming President may do a club survey while preparing for their year to help focus on projects, speakers, and show learning gaps.

It is easy to assume our members self-educate themselves about Rotary; however, truthfully, many Rotarians are just too busy to add one more self –directed training to their “to-do” list. Therefore, club leadership should regularly integrate relevant Rotary speakers into club programs. Here is a handy list to help organize speakers in keeping with RI’s new special observance months, starting July 1, 2105:

September: Basic Education and Literacy

February: Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution

October: Economic and Community Development

March: Water and Sanitation

December: Disease Prevention and Treatment

April: Maternal and Child Health

January: Vocational Service

May: Youth Services

Not sure, where to find a speaker who will be on target, go to www.rotary7090.org and click on the Organizational Chart on the left side. You will want to log in to view contact information.  Any of these District leaders will assist you to find a speaker about these themes. Challenge your club to use these themes as a training tool in 2015-2016. You might be surprised to find these generate new energy and new projects come from these targeted programs.

Rotary International has developed a terrific number of video about our focuses. In addition, many of the webinars they sponsor on an on-going basis are taped and can be downloaded for your club. https://www.rotary.org/en/learning-reference/webinars/upcoming. These are great training tools for new and seasoned Rotarians.

If you really want to ramp up your club’s Rotary knowledge and help engage new members and retain members, add a Training Champion to your leadership team. Our District has tools to help direct this new trainer. Enroll the person into one of the upcoming Club Leadership Training sessions in St. Catharines, ON on Saturday, April 11th or in Niagara Falls, NY on Saturday, May 2nd. On the other hand, how about enrolling your Champion in the Rotary Leadership Institute, there is one on Saturday, May 6th in Niagara on the Lake. As one graduating member of the March 21st RLI event stated in their evaluation, “There is ‘magic’ in RLI and it works! It is a commitment of three Saturdays to graduate, however it is a sound investment of your time and the club’s training dollars.

Helping members learn they are a part of the world’s largest service club who is doing good work everywhere certainly helps recruit new members and retain those who are already Rotarians. Rotarians sharing our common focus and goals work hard to do so much good whether locally or globally. Please help give your club the tools.

CYCLING TO LIGHT UP ROTARY

The Ride For Roswell 2015 will take place June 26 and 27. In 2014, more than 10,000 riders and volunteers participated in the event and raised over $4.4 million. Throughout its history, The Ride has raised over $29 million for cutting-edge cancer research and compassionate, innovative patient-care programs at Roswell Park.  The Ride is Western New York’s largest single-day fundraising event, will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2015.

Service Committee Chair of BNMC Rotary and 7-year Roswell Park employee Anthony Billoni is planning to mark his first year as an inaugural member of BNMC Rotary by riding the Can-Am Route of The Ride.  He is also seeking fellow 7090 Rotarians to join a team so we can “Light Up Rotary” among the 10,000 riders and volunteers that participate.  “What better way for our clubs that put “Service Above Self” to get our name out there at the region’s largest and most well-known fund-raising event.” Billoni said.  He is seeking Rotarian cyclists and fitness enthusiasts of all levels of experience to join the team and give Rotary a presence. “Once we get a few riders I’d like for us to use our creative Rotary energy to make our team and our district visible during this great event.”

NIAGARA ON THE LAKE HOSTS ROTARIANS FROM 9 LOCAL CLUBS

The Niagara on the Lake Rotary Club had the pleasure of hosting this year’s joint lunch meeting of local Niagara clubs in White Oaks conference centre. It was very well attended by Rotarians from the three St Catharines clubs, Niagara Falls, Welland, Fonthill, Ancaster, Niagara on the Lake - Lewiston and the SOWNY e-club.  This was largely due to our phenomenal speaker, Past RI President Wilf Wilkinson.

PRIP Wilf entertained the members with some personal stories and gave a fascinating insight into the workings of the Rotary Foundation.

His Statement, "The Rotary Foundation is the closest thing that we have to real magic" struck a chord with his audience.  Apparently, life after being a RI president does not put one on the back burner; after this meeting he was taking a quick trip to Dubai and then on to Tulsa Oklahoma for their club's 100th anniversary - they booked him 7 years ago!

Wilf's enthusiam and energy reminded our attendees of what Rotary is all about.

SWEDEN DISTRICT GOVERNOR ELECT MAKES UP IN JAMESTOWN

District Governor Elect Goren Samuelsson from Sweden visited the Rotary Club of Jamestown on January 26 on his way back home after the DG training out west.   He stopped in Jamestown to visit his cousin, Rotarian Donna Johnson, who is very active in Thule Lodge and the Scandinavian Festival.  (For those who are unfamiliar with the western part of New York, Jamestown is well populated by folks of Swedish and Italian descent).

Goran Samuelsson, who will be Governor 2015 - 2016 effective July 1, is from District 2340, Sweden.  He is a member of Orebro Rotary Club, Orebro Sweden.  There are approximately 90 members in his club and there are 5 clubs in Orebro.  District 2340 has a total of 50 clubs and approximately 2900 members.  He spoke briefly on the challenges they are facing in Sweden, many of which we are facing also - like aging, attracting younger members.  He also mentioned the changing demographics in Sweden and the influx of immigrants from impoverished countries in need of help.  Goran is looking forward to the upcoming year and the challenges of being Governor of District 2340.

JAMESTOWN HEARS FROM SPEAKERS

At a recent meeting, the Rotary Club of Jamestown heard from Andrew Nixon, the director of the Chautauqua County Visitor's Bureau who spoke about tourism in Chautauqua County. According to Andrew, tourism is a major industry in Chautauqua County, which is growing significantly.   In addition to the many statistics that prove this statement, Andrew noted that the advertising and PR generated by our county's tourism industry is positive messaging that can be used to combat negativity and so-called "bad press".  In the photo on the right, left to right, Andrew Nixon, President Todd Allen and Doug Conroe, the program chair for March.

At another meeting in March of the Rotary Club of Jamestown, the club was delighted to hear from the new Owner and Manager of the Jamestown Jammer, Jamestown's semi professional baseball team. In the photo on the left, from left to right, Anthony Barone, Jamestown Jammers Manager, Jamestown Noon Rotary President Todd Allen, and Kevin Rhomberg, Jamestown Jammers Owner and former Major League Baseball Player.

CALEDONIA ROTARIAN SPEAKS TO DUNNVILLE

Recently, on January 15, the Rotary Club of Dunnville received a visit from Jim Aldridge of the Rotary Club of Caledonia.  Jim’s presentation was very informative and encouraging in the area of fundraising.  He spoke of the importance of purpose and commitment when setting up fundraising events.  There were many great ideas for getting people interested, committed and helping out with our next fundraising event.

DUNNVILLE ROTARY'S FREE FAMILY DAY FUN

On February 16 about 325 people walked through the doors of the Lifespan Centre at the Dunnville Arena between 2 and 5pm for Dunnville Rotary’s Free Family Day Fun!  Dunnville Rotary provided good food: chili or soup with a dinner roll, and coffee/hot chocolate or juice to drink for the many families who enjoyed this special even and to sponsors: Debb Davies Catering, Flyer’s Café and Tim Horton’s!

There were free activities provided as well which included making a family handprint wreath, or a couple of different colouring sheets.  Haldimand County provided large scale, interactive games, and two employees to supervise them who were kept very busy by the children who were enjoying them.  They also provided giant Jenga blocks which were a big hit with the older children.

All in all this day was a huge success with many community members stopping a Rotarian to thank them for a wonderful addition to the free skate that was held at the arena.  This really raised the profile of Dunnville Rotary in a very positive way and the club anticipates making this an annual community event.

BNMC HOLDS INAUGURAL CHILI COOK-OFF

On Sunday March 1st Rotary BNMC hosted its inaugural Chili Cook-Off fundraiser. The event featured entries from clubs around the district including BNMC, Buffalo, Buffalo Sunrise, Clarence, Kenmore and Olean. The well-attended event was the BNMC club’s first major fundraiser, drew Rotarians from across the district raising money to be used locally in Western New York.

Guests bought tickets that allowed them to vote for their favorite chili, as well as a special ticket to vote for their favorite sales pitch.

District Governor Jack Amico presented the BNMC Club white chili team as the winner for 2015, and awarded the red chili team with the honorable mention. The BNMC Board decided to award the 1st Place cash prize to the next winner:  Clarence Rotary, and the Honorable mention to the 4th winner:  Rotary Buffalo.  In photo, BNMC Rotarians Karen Johnson and Meg Keller-Cogan pose with the trophy after winning first place.

In addition to the chili, beer and wine were available. The event also featured many silent auction items.

The fundraiser would not have been nearly as successful as it was without the great fundraising committee, the generous sponsors, and the support of our fellow Rotarians and neighboring Rotary Clubs. We are already looking forward to next year’s event.

WESTFIELD MAYVILLE RECEIVES CHECK FOR LITERACY PROGRAM IN NIGER

The Westfield/Mayville Rotary Club received a matching grant check disbursement for its children’s literacy education program in Niger, Africa. The $2,000 grant (of which $1000 was matched by District 7090) supported the purchase of instructional materials for children’s literacy education, explained Jim Wakeman, W/M Rotary’s Foundation Chair/Club Grant Manager. “The literacy materials were purchased in August and delivered in October to several schools in villages near the capital city of Niamey, Niger.”

In recognition of this contribution, Pravin Suchak, Past District Governor and Foundation District Grants Committee member, visited the local club to present the $1000 match.    “The Foundation is the heart of Rotary giving,” Suchak said. “This check today is partially from you, the members of this Rotary Club, and also from all of us in Rotary District 7090.”  Such giving allows for many worthwhile local and global projects to be completed. I encourage all people to annually give even a few dollars so that this Rotary Club may earn the ‘Every Rotarian, Every Year’ distinction,” Suchak concluded.

LOCAL AUTHOR SPEAKS TO GREATER JAMESTOWN AM

Beth Peyton, author, was the speaker at the Rotary Club of Jamestown AM on March 11.  She shared briefly some entertaining excerpts from her memoir, Clear Skies, Deep Waters. Beth told about the genesis of the book and that as a memoir it explores an aspect of her life - not her whole life, but in this instance, the aspect of healing.  Beth indicated that she and her husband moved to Chautauqua Lake, a place they loved, to heal after great loss, truly an endorsement for the area.  After listening to Beth, several club members purchased an autographed copy - looking forward to reading a delightful and often humorous account of life on one of Chautauqua County's beloved lakes.

In the photo with Beth is neighbor and Rotarian Bob Terreberry, who recruited her as speaker and President Bill Burley.

FONTHILL EARLY ACT BACK WITH A ROAR

The Early Act Club at A.K. Wigg Elementary School in Fonthill has the privilege of being the first chartered Early Act Club in Canada.  Although the club has had its ups and down over the first few years of its existence, 2015 is proving to be the best year yet as the club takes on projects for its community. As every parent knows, youngsters are often wanting to help but simply do not know how. Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Fonthill, the Early Act club is all about helping others in the community.

“I had been wrestling with the idea of giving back to the community and leaving a good social imprint,” organizer and Grade 8 teacher Tim Droppert said.  He continued, “I thought no better place than using a public school to do that.”  Droppert says that many elementary aged students are at the stage where they are learning about compassion, but often are left without outlets to use it. The club operates on the ideas of courage and community, which led to the partnership with Pelham Cares.

The students first chance to give back came on March 12 when the school hosted the first-ever Wigg Winter Classic — a ball hockey tournament in which all proceeds will head back into the community through Pelham Cares Youth Sponsorship Program.  “It was amazing the response from the students once word got out.  Every meeting we had, more students would come out and it really built some steam.”, indicated Droppert.

After the one-day tournament, more than $900 had been raised, which will go to help subsidize organized sports activities for less fortunate youth in the community.
Droppert also had the club participate in other activities as well, including the Coldest Night of the Year in support of homelessness.  He plans to host two major events each year, with several small fundraisers throughout the year.

NEW MEMBER ADDED

In other news, the Rotary Club of Fonthill recently welcomed a new member who is already familiar with Rotary’s objectives. John Julien joined the club as a transfer from the Niagara-on-the-Lake club, as a result of his family’s relocation to Fonthill. Andrew Larmand, left, Membership Chair, provides John with his certificate of membership.
